Can I guess your age based on your name?

Based on official French data from INSEE, this dashboard displays the number of births per year since 1900 for the 1000 most popular first names in France. It also calculates the median age and the age interval for half of the first name bearers. You can also see the most correlated names.

The correlation between names is calculated using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, which is a non-parametric method, thus not assuming any specific distribution. It basically ranks the observations (number of names occurences by year), and compares the correlation of ranks between the two series. Below is an example on how to compute it in SQL.

For example, if your name is Nicolas, there is a 50% chance that you are between 32 and 47 years old. And you probably knew some Guillaume, Laetitia, Vincent and Caroline at school. Does it bring back any memories?
